Reflections on Theologians' Hangout 2024: A Confluence of Faith, Scholarship, and Transformation

The Theologians' Hangout 2024 was a transformative two-day gathering held from December 12-13, 2024, at the United Missionary Church of Africa (UMCA) in Ilorin. Designed as a platform for theological reflection, spiritual renewal, and academic dialogue, the event brought together theologians, religious leaders, scholars, and students to explore critical issues facing African Christianity in a post-pandemic world.


Theme: Resilience and Transformation

Under the banner "Resilience and Transformation: African Christianity in the Post-COVID-19 Era," the Hangout tackled the multifaceted challenges and opportunities within African Christianity. This theme resonated deeply with attendees, offering a framework for discussions on the evolving role of theology and the church in contemporary society.


Participation and Attendance

With over 120 attendees onsite and 188 registered participants online, the event attracted a diverse audience. The presence of notable figures in theology and church leadership enriched the discussions, while the active engagement of students and community members underscored the growing interest in theological education and its impact on societal transformation.


Day 1 Highlights: December 12, 2024

Opening Session

The event began with a vibrant worship session led by the UMCATC Choir, followed by a devotional led by the UMCATC SUG President. Warm welcomes from Mr. Emmanuel Oluwaseunayo Awoyemi, the Provost of UMCATC Rev. Dr. Ebenezer Kayode, and the Opening Address by Prof. Ango Peni set the stage for the thought-provoking sessions to follow. Prof. Peni's address, "Interrogating the Perceived Relevance of Theological Education in Nigeria," challenged participants to reflect on the practical value of theological training in addressing contemporary societal issues.

Keynote Address

Rev. Dr. B. M. Owojaiye delivered a compelling keynote on using phenomenological frameworks in theological research, emphasizing the importance of understanding lived experiences and the meanings attached to them.

Workshops and Panels


A highlight of the day was a Writing Workshop and Guide for Grant Applications led by Dr. Adeboye Godwin and Dr. Edward Nnanna, equipping participants with practical skills for academic and professional growth. Dr. Nnanna also led a panel discussion on Interfaith Dynamics and Post-COVID-19 African Christianity, sparking lively debates.


Day 2 Highlights: December 13, 2024

Morning Worship and Devotional

The day began with worship led by the UMCATC Choir, a devotional by Rev. Adenigba David, and a prayer by Rev. Ademola. The morning's spiritual tone prepared participants for the day’s rich academic sessions.

Key Discussions

Theological Education for the Future
Prof. Maniraj Sukdaven joined virtually to discuss the future of theological education and proposed the establishment of a Young Theologians Network in Africa. A committee was appointed to draft the proposal within two months.

Essay Competition Papers were presented by:

    • Rasaki James Inga (ECWA Theological College, Kano)
    • Roseline Aderonke Adeyemo (The Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary, Ogbomoso)
    • Sunday Julius (ECWA Theological Seminary, Igbaja).


Scholarships were awarded to the winners, with Roseline Aderonke Adeyemo receiving ₦100,000 and the other two participants ₦50,000 each.

Intergenerational Issues in African Christian Theological Education
Led by Revd. Prof. Emiola Nihinlola, this session examined challenges such as enrollment trends, delivery modes, and financial sustainability. Panelists represented both older and younger generations, fostering an intergenerational dialogue on theological education.

Book Project

A major outcome was the commissioning of a book to be published in the UK. Editors Dr. Adeboye Godwin, Dr. Edward Nnanna, and Dr. B. M. Owojaiye will oversee the project, featuring key papers from the Hangout, including Prof. Nihinlola’s presentation and the essay competition winners.


Conclusion

The Theologians' Hangout 2024 provided an inspiring and intellectually enriching environment for theological dialogue, collaborative learning, and spiritual growth. The conversations and connections formed will undoubtedly influence the future of African Christianity. UMCA Ilorin was commended for its exceptional hospitality and organizational excellence, laying a strong foundation for future editions of this impactful event.
